The setting of this Novel is in Macha( Choma District) found in the Southern Province of Zambia.Zambia was witnessing an expansion of the middle class with surge in the income levels of households. Shadreck was a wealthy young man From Macha, Choma,with a thriving transport business. As a transport magnate, he was numbered among the wealthiest in the southern region of Zambia. However his heayvy drinking problem destabilized his business, health and marriage life. His wife Phostinah left him because of ill treating her, especially when drunk. Later Phostinah would pursue a career to be a police officer. She was deployed to work at Macha police post, to become the first female police incharge. She vowed to fight the problem of alcoholism in her community, which she felt gave birth to other vices like domestic violence,defilement and the rise in the number of juvenile deliquency cases. What will happen to Shadreck as his ex-wife is busy bringing to Justice the perpetrators of heinous crimes in her community???
Tiza uses this novel/ story of Shadreck, whose life was cut short by alcoholism to depict the Zambia society where the excessive intake of alcohol has become the source of diseases, grief and poverty among young people. He shows the negative effects of excess intake of alcohol on a person's health, personality and society as a whole.
